Rarer than rare, the tonneau shaped Audemars Piguet Lapis Lazuli is a befitting piece of art from the maison best known for the Royal Oak. This piece is a far cry from the brutish, almost industrial looking Royal Oak. Sweeping curves, a dichotomy of textures and, of course, that gorgeous lapis lazuli dial. Stone dials are having a moment. As are Audemars Piguet timepieces that are not the Royal Oak or some derivative of it. The Lapis Lazuli is a beautiful expression of Audemars Piguet’s unique approach to watchmaking in general, but also more specifically of classical dress watches. From the white gold mesh bracelet to the white gold case, Audemars Piguet has vertically engraved the entirety of the piece. The effect is much like that of water running over vertically aligned stone. The textural contrast here is the impeccable lapis lazuli dial. Sturdiness and strength are not the forte of stone dials, but this one in particular presents in flawless condition without any sign of cracking or fragmentation. With the dial being the focal point, sterility has been optimised with minimal intrusion over that gorgeous lapis lazuli – with the exception being the Audemars Piguet and Swiss text, along with two simple white gold baton hands.
For purveyors of both beauty and rarity, the Audemars Piguet Lapis Lazuli is a fine example of what lies deep within the maison’s archival coffers. Truly magnificent.
