In this week’s instalment of ‘MR PORTER x Haulogerie: Picks of the Week’, we have a pretty heavy focus on IWC, perpetual calendars to celebrate the phenomenon of February 29, along with a handful of new pieces from Vacheron Constantin, Panerai and Cartier. Enjoy!
IWC Portugieser Perpetual Calendar
The quintessential perpetual calendar, IWC’s Portugieser Perpetual Calendar embodies the exacting tenets of a modern perpetual calendar timepiece. Legible, wearable and distinct, this particular model features a stunning combination of a white gold case with a deep midnight-blue dial.
Parmigiani Fleurier Toric Quantième Perpetual Retrograde Calendar Moonphase
The Toric Quantième Perpetual Retrograde Calendar Moonphase is Parmigiani Fleurier’s unique take on the perpetual calendar. Featuring a retrograde date indicator, along with month/day displays indicated in separate windows as well as a moonphase indicator, the Toric Quantième Perpetual Retrograde Calendar Moonphase marries the romanticism of the perpetual calendar with the moonphase in an exceptional manner. The Toric Quantième Perpetual Retrograde Calendar Moonphase sits in an 18k red gold case and has an absolutely divine creamy dial with stunning machined bezel.
IWC Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar Chronograph
IWC’s Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar Chronograph combines the magnificence of the perpetual calendar with the functionality of a chronograph encased in perhaps the most luxurious packaging of any watch, rose gold. This particular example is subtle, beautiful and is a complete spectacle. Delicate in nature but executed flawlessly in designed, the Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar Chronograph is exquisite.
Vacheron Constantin Quai de L’Ile
Encased in pink gold, Vacheron Constantin’s Quai de L’Ile is a very avant-garde piece from one of the holy trinity of watchmakers. It features a date ring within the dial, with the date being ‘highlighted’ by a rotating disc beneath the dial surface. Its bulky case features some beautiful angles and finishing techniques, and while this is quite out of the box for Vacheron, this is still truly a very special timepiece.
IWC Ingeniuer Automatic
One of the newest additions to MR PORTER’s collection, the IWC Ingeniuer Automatic is wonderful timepiece that combines functionality, durability and luxury all in one. The sunray-finished silver dial offsets the gleam of the polished stainless steel case, with the black leather strap adding a touch of elegance to the piece. Virtuous, indiscreet and astoundingly beautiful.
Vacheron Constantin Malte Hand-Wound
Similar to that of the Quai De L’Ile, Vacheron Constantin’s Malte Hand-Wound is not perhaps what we would expect from the famed atelier. Featuring a tonneau-shaped pink gold case, a black dial and bold hour markers and Roman numerals, the Malte Hand-Wound is a large offering that does qualify it as a statement piece. However, it does hold itself in an elegant manner and would suffice quite easily as a dress piece. Either way, it looks superb.
Panerai Submersible Carbotech
With its black Carbotech case, black ceramic bezel, iconic crown and shield system, and luminous blue markings and hands, Panerai’s Submersible Carbotech PAM00960 is striking, durable and supremely cool. I’ve long been a fan of Panerai’s unique yet consistent approach to watchmaking, with the Submersible Carbotech PAM00960 being a prime example of the
brand’s ability to continue to reinvent its pieces, remain relevant and modern, all the while staying true to its underlying heritage.
IWC Portofino Chronograph
Clad in 42mm of stainless steel and featuring a super elegant aesthetic, the IWC Portofino Chronograph combines delicacy with beauty in a package that is simple exquisite. The vertically inclined chronograph dial layout enables a day-date indicator to be fitted, adding to the piece’s daily usability ratings, and with a look as subtle as this, the Portofino Chronograph can easily be dressed up or down.
Cartier Tank Américaine Automatic
Brash, bold yet smooth and subtle, the Cartier Tank Américaine Automatic is in itself a horological establishment. Elongated, minimalistic and absolutely divine, the Tank Américaine Automatic is a reminder to us all of Cartier’s watchmaking prowess. Embellished in tradition and culture, the Tank Américaine Automatic represents all that is beautiful and important in watchmaking. Significant, gorgeous and ultimately perfect.
