Welcome to the next instalment of our MR PORTER x Haulogerie: Watch Picks of the Week series. In this week's round up, we'll be covering one of our favourite complicated watches, the perpetual calendar, including examples from Vacheron Constantin, Jaeger-LeCoultre and IWC. Enjoy!
Vacheron Constantin Overseas Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin
Crafted in pink gold and featuring a stunning blue dial, the Vacheron Constantin Overseas Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin is an epic piece that combines beauty with mechanical mastery. It's a brilliant piece, really accentuating the watchmaking capabilities of its maison. I really like the info-packed dial, but I can see how some may find it too busy.
The Vacheron Constantin Overseas Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin is a gorgeous piece that is balanced, practical and supremely functional. One of the best perpetual calendars on the market.
IWC Big Pilot's Perpetual Calendar Rodeo Drive
Featuring a 46mm wide ceramic case, the IWC Big Pilot's Perpetual Calendar Rodeo Drive is definitely not a piece for the faint hearted. It commands a big wrist and an even bigger personality. I personally love this piece. It's the perfect balance of too much and just enough
The layout of the perpetual calendar indicators are very legible, I really like the sporty-cross-stealth look of the ceramic case and that deep blue dial is just incredible.
Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin Perpetual
Jaeger-LeCoultre is the king of understated luxury, and the Master Ultra Thin Perpetual is just another example of that. This particular model is crafted in rose gold and features a beautifully creamy dial.
Like the IWC Big Pilot's Perpetual Calendar Rodeo Drive, the Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin Perpetual's dial is super legible and easy to read. The separation of all the functions was a great idea, and I love how the moonphase indicator wasn't just an afterthought.
IWC Portugieser Perpetual Calendar 42mm
This new generation of Portugieser Perpetual Calendars are now available in a 42mm wide case. The drop of a few millimetres might not sound like much, but in the world of watches it's a huge difference. I quite like the new look of the IWC Portugieser Perpetual Calendar 42mm. There's plenty of empty real estate around the IWC insignia allowing for a very uncluttered dial.
I think that legibility is a penchant of IWC's perpetual calendars, with the Portugieser Perpetual Calendar 42mm again proving that point.
IWC Portugieser Perpetual Calendar Boutique Edition
This particular model, named the IWC Portugieser Perpetual Calendar Boutique Edition, heads back to the original 44.20mm size of the other Portugieser Perpetual Calendar models. Named the Boutique Edition, this limited edition model has a stunning midnight blue dial and a beautiful 18k gold case.
I love the combination of the cool look of the blue dial and the warmth of the gold case -- it's an aesthetic that is as timeless as it is relevant and beautiful. Would definitely cop!
IWC Portugieser Perpetual Calendar 42mm
Last but not least is another variation of the IWC Portugieser Perpetual Calendar 42mm.This model is crafted in stainless steel and has a silver-plated dial with gold hands, numerals and indices. This looks to be the dressier version of the two IWC Portugieser Perpetual Calendar 42mm models on this list and I really like how clean the piece looks.
The white dial on the almost sterile-looking steel case gives the IWC Portugieser Perpetual Calendar 42mm the ability to be dressed as formally and as casually as you desire. Functional and stunning!
